Unravel Seabass Secrets and Other Mysteries of Catalina Island Capt. Mark Wisch has published his second book In the Gray, sharing his 40 years of experience fishing Catalina Island with private boaters. At 496 pages and packed with local knowledge and detailed information about how to fish these challenging waters, this is the long-awaited follow-up to Wisch s highly popular debut book Between Two and Twenty Fathoms. If ever there was an angling destination that separates private boaters who know from those who don t, it s Catalina, said Wisch. The waters around this popular island team with calico bass, yellowtail, halibut and white seabass, but they re nobody s fools. To find and catch them on a regular basis, it takes knowledge of their habits, understanding of their environments and the ability to read conditions. I ve put most of what I ve learned over four decades of fishing Catalina into the pages of this book, to give other private boaters a short cut to success, Wisch emphasized. Each of the book s six main sections (comprising 35 total chapters) focuses on a specific set of skills that provide the building blocks needed to master these enigmatic waters. Section One is dedicated to teaching anglers about the island s four primary target species, their habits and their habitats with special attention paid to that gray ghost of Catalina, the white seabass. Section Two goes into great detail about the forces of nature weather, wind, currents, tides and moon phase and how they affect fishing. I saw an ad in Western Outdoor News for a fishing seminar on "candy bait" at a church in Seal Beach. I had just bought a 25' skippy for bug diving, but bug season was now over, and a long summer lay ahead. I went to the seminar and there was a speaker talking in a frank business like manner about how to attract and catch squid to prepare to catch WSB off Catalina. I ended up buying the book and a squid light. I read the book, lost the light somewhere in the boat, and preceeded to use the techniques and some of the numbers out of the book - Thx Mark! Our first foray was to the east end, where three of us, all never having caught a WSB, bought some squid at 4:30 AM, popped around the east end, hit the waypoint button for a spot out of the book, metered big meatballs of WSB near our spot in the gray, dropped our lines, and within 3 minutes hooked up three 30 pound WSB. While the fleet lay off the Vees miles away not catching squat, we killed them on our own spot picked and confirmed with Marks teachings and techniques...Bottom line is, the book really works and is a joy to read. Sure, it has some spelling and grammatical errors, but its really packed with knowledge you would have to spend years gathering on your own! If you want to catch Yellowtail and WSB in SoCal, this is a must read for you. Now if only Mel and Ray would write a bug book with numbers I'd really be happy.
