This is an enjoyable read on working squirrel dogs. It is hard to find any other books on the subject. This work features good information on Cur and Feist breeds, as well as a little on terriers, hounds, and a few other dogs. The advice on working with a "tree oriented" dog is very worthwhile. I have read many books about Brittish working terriers, but finding one on American working treeing dogs was a delight. It also includes a chapter on squirrel management and one on the squirrels themselves, and another on squirrel recipes. This has become a valued piece in my collection of books on working dogs.
I was hoping for more information about training. A huge chunk of the book is devoted to the history of squirrel dogs, as well as different varieties, which is some fascinating stuff, but I was hoping for some more technique. But it's one of the only books on the subject and it's written really well.
Great little book on squirrel dog, breeds and history, very well researched. I was really looking for something with MORE training information. But from all the research I've done I've come to a conclusion. Buy a well bred dog, and a new pair of boots. Bet behind the dog in the woods, and when the boots are wore out, you'll have a pretty good squirrel dog! The book is worth the money, read it in a day.
There aren't that many good publications that deal with squirrel hunting and training squirrel dogs. This book helps fill that void and is a broad overview on squirrel hunting and training squirrel dogs for hunting and competition.
Good hunting techniques addressed in this book A very good read! I recommend this book for novice squirrel dog owners who want a good place to start in order to train their dog.
Great book.
