But since James Naismith organized the first basketball game on January 20, 1892 (in the gym at the YMCA in Springfield MA), a bit more than eight years after the date of this story, I think we can take football's priority to be demonstrated. Smith. Smith places American football as distinct from Rugby with the 1882/1883 season. The changes didn't happen all at once, so this is somewhat arbitrary. That was the first year of the downs rule.
