This powerful seismic history stopped suddenly, just when I thought he was going to go forward to more recent discoveries. I didn’t pay attention to the copyright date so perhaps John Nance will do a sequel, On Shaky Ground: water and sun on earthquakes (hint). I am 71 years old and, since I retired, I have been studying all things geophysical (earthquakes, volcanoes, rock slides, tsunamis and avalanches). I loved this book. The research was incredible and the individuals’ stories were poignant!

The earthquakes that are mentioned in the book are ones that are familiar to most everyone who has an interest in earthquakes. The thoughts of what to do and prepare for in the future are quite helpful.

Well worth reading. I gave it 5 stars because the subject matter is so important. If you enjoy history, you'll probably love this book. It tells the story of many earthquakes in the last 120 years, most of them in the United States. If you are a fan of disaster fiction, be warned that this book does not have the fast pace of a novel. But then again, it is true! The real-life scientists involved in breakthrough studies are used to propel the narrative, ending with a list of proactive steps community or governmental agencies can take to minimize death and damage from seismic events.

Did you know that 39 of the 50 states are considered high-risk for earthquakes? I live in one of them. I wonder if you do, too.

John Nance did a tremendous job researching the history of earthquakes in the World, describing the aftermath of serious quakes, and detailing how far seismologists have come in being able to predict earthquakes. This book was written in 1988 and now it is 2018. Hopefully our government leaders have provided funding for research since this was written. Nance sounded the alarm - did they listen? I hope so.

I read this book years ago and was very enlightened by it. We are not as safe as we thought. Read this book and learn.

I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot in the process. Read at the right time in a person's life, it could cause them to become a geologist/volcanologist, etc.

This is a really interesting book to read. Like a lot of people, I thought that earthquakes only occurred on the west coast. John Nance brings a compelling picture of the reality of earthquakes on the east coast. I found myself questioning everything I knew about earthquakes. So now, even though I would love to retire to the Pacific Northwest , I won't. I will heed what scientists are warning. A good factual read. Love books by John Nance.
