The Living Gulf Coast is the first comprehensive nature guide to Florida's Southwest region. The book covers six counties: Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Glades and Hendry. There are more than 160 parks, preserves and eco-destinations covered in this work, with sixty-one of them described in great detail. Not only does the book describe these outstanding destinations, it also covers all the major birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians found throughout the region. The bird section includes 291 species with 120 of the most commonly encountered birds covered in exacting detail. It also includes all the major mammals and eighty-eight snakes, lizards, turtles and crocodilans found in the unique ecosystems of Southwest Florida. With more than 600 full-color photographs of wildlife, campgrounds, rivers and parks this is an essential tool for exploring everywhere from the Florida Everglades to the aquarium at Mote Marine. This book is an absolute must have for any nature lover, birder, biker, hiker, kayaker, canoeist or naturalist planning to visit Southwest Florida.

This is not a book that can be classified as a field guide, although it does contain information that helps identify birds, animals and reptiles that can be found in SW Florida. This book will inspire the reader to get out there into the wonders of nature. The aspect of the book I like the most -- aside from the fabulous photography (and the fact that the photographers are celebrated) -- the comprehensive destination guide which forms the major section of the book. There are many more places to poke around than I could have imagined.

Never actually saw the book; it was a gift for my sister. She likes it.

We are moving to the Florida gulf coast, and get excited reading about all the great parks and beaches to explore. This book is so comprehensive. A very good first guide book of the area. Would have given it 5 stars, but did not care for some of the enviriomentalist commentary.

This book was a big hit as a gift to my dad. Now maybe he will stop asking everyone to google every bird, lizard and bug.

Very pleased with this book. I gave it to my mother for a Christmas gift because she wanted to learn about FL birds and flowers. She's really enjoying it.

One of the most beautiful and informative books I have read about the Florida Gulf Coast. Forget theme parks, the real beauty and excitement is all natural

This is a beautiful and informative book. Everything about it is well done. The photographs are excellent and the information contained is just enough without overloading the reader with unnecessary details.
Great reference for new Florida resident.
