by Polly Thompson

A captivating portrayal of friendship, dedication, and the magical bond between riders and their horses, Polly Thompson's Horses and Heartbeats begins with an outing to a horse show that sets off riding lessons for precautious Theodore North, and a quest for a horse of her own for self-determined Bailey Mason. The story brings us into the lives of the elegant contestants at a hunter-jumper show; the schooling mounts at a boarding stable; and the horses in various states of conditioning that come through a Connecticut auction. One of these, a young mare fresh off the Dakota plains, is destined for a green but gutsy teenager.       Bailey Mason always wanted a horse, but never imagined the responsibility involved with keeping one--especially the spirited filly, Dakota Clover. Reading and advice-seeking, along with the determination to climb back on whenever she falls off, build Bailey's skills, even to being a nurse when her horse gets sick. Bailey perseveres through the upsets. The horse is well and she is riding again, when a disaster threatens to bring her exciting progress to a halt. Now her friend Theodore North steps in to help with the chores. As Bailey's and Theo's devotion to the horse grows, so does their affection for each other. A fund of hands-on experience runs through the realistic story of these young people and their friends, as they make ready for a gymkhana giving rise to more upsets.

Horses and Heartbeats clearly is the work of a horse-loving author who projects her love of horses into her teenage characters. I'm not a horse lover, but I became engaged in the process and struggles of the friends who work with Dakota Clover, readying the horse for a competition in which they all participate. The friends' work is far more about the journey, however, than about the competition itself. They find a common bond in the horse and develop their own friendships, as well as love for the four-legged companion. Neither sappy nor predictable, Horses and Heartbeats offers enjoyable reading and an uplifting, realistic story appealing both to young adults and older adults like myself. The book is a pleasing, real-life alternative to much mainstream fiction, offering a fantasy that really can and does come true.
watching to future
I love the books my grandkids read. It keeps me young in spirit. This book was written so well that I felt close to the characters. And they were lovely kids. It reminded me of my childhood, living next to a farm and all the wholesome, healthy experiences I had like collecting eggs, riding the combine, milking cows by hand, squirting the milk in the barn kittens mouths and the smells of freshly cut hay and alfalfa. Ms. Thompson gives us a good perspective on the joys and hard work of horse owning. I am anxious to read a sequel.
