by Nora Roberts

Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a long way from Hollywood. And that’s exactly how Cilla McGowan likes it. Cilla, a former child star, has found a more satisfying life working with her hands to restore homes from floor to ceiling – and has come here to her grandmother’s farmhouse, tools at her side, to rescue it from ruin. Sadly, no one had been able to save her grandmother, the legendary Janet Hardy. An actress with a golden voice and a tumultuous life, Janet entertained glamorous guests and engaged in decadent affairs – but died of an overdose in this very house more than thirty years ago. To this day, Janet haunts Cilla’s dreams. And during her waking hours, Cilla is haunted by her melodramatic, five-times-married mother, who carried on in the public spotlight and never gave her a chance at a normal childhood. By coming to the East Coast, rolling up her sleeves, and rehabbing this wreck of a house, Cilla intends to take a shot at finding some kind of normalcy for herself. Cilla has her work cut out for her – the house, once a place of comfort and simple rural beauty, is long neglected, crumbling, the grounds choked by weeds. Plunging into the project with gusto, she’s almost too busy and exhausted to notice her neighbor, graphic novelist Ford Sawyer – but his lanky form, green eyes, and easy, unflappable humor (not to mention his delightfully ugly dog, Spock) are hard to ignore. Determined not to carry on the family tradition of ill-fated romances, Cilla steels herself against Ford’s quirky charm, but she can’t help indulging in a little fantasy. But love and a peaceful life may not be in the cards for Cilla. In the house’s cluttered attic, she has found a cache of unsigned letters, tied with a faded red ribbon, suggesting that Janet Hardy was pregnant when she died – and that the father of her child was a local married man. Cilla can’t help but wonder what really happened all those years ago. The mystery only deepens with a series of cruel and intimidating acts and a frightening, violent assault. And if Cilla and Ford are unable to sort out who is targeting her and why, she may, like her world-famous grandmother, be cut down in the prime of her life.

Story of a child star, that comes from a history of stars, that decides to turn away from movies and mad for TV series, and become an ordinary person. She has an ability to build things and buys the family farm to re-furbish it, as a place where her grandmother came to get away.
She meets the neighbor and begins a relationship that ends with her falling in love with him.
As she is working on the farm house, she finds some old letters of her grandmothers that lead to vandalism, break-ins destruction of property and an attempted murder.
The story leads the reader through a series of events that end with the suspect being identified and there is an excellent twist.
Another great writing by this author and a demonstration of attention to detail she is known for.

I usually give Nora Roberts a five star rating. However there were two issues I had with this book. The first and most annoying was that it took too long to get to the mystery. I almost stopped reading it because it took so long to capture my interest. Secondly, I thought the ending came out of nowhere. Those characters weren't developed enough to consider them seriously. In my humble opinion, not one of her best. However, I did give her four stars because no one but Roberts could think of this interesting plotline.
Risky Strong Dromedary
Tribute is about an ex-star named Cilla who buys her grandmothers house and fixes it. Along the way she meets Ford and in the process she is finally able to find out what really happened to her grandmother and her true inner strength. Cilla is a really likable woman, she is strong with a great sense of humor, yet she has an inner vulnerability that only gets seen by those close to her. Ford is interesting, he is an artist and comic geek, yet he is not feminine nor is he shy. He has strong opinions and a wonderful sense of humor. He balances out Cilla's larger than life personality and when things get tough he is right there with her. While Cilla is fixing up the house she has someone sabotaging her project, someone trashes her bathrooms and calls to change her orders. There is a mystery behind Cilla's grandmothers' death, her and Ford try to find out who her grandmother was having an affair with before she died. This book is one of my favorite Nora Roberts, it starts out as a lazy day read and I kept telling myself oh I'll put it down after this chapter. This book really sucked me in and before I knew I had finished it.

Cilla McGowen is a former child star brought up in the glamour of Hollywood. Both her parents were actors up until their divorce, when her father Gavin McGowen dropped out of the limelight to live a normal life. Cilla now longs for that same normal life, and decides to renovate her grandmother's old farmhouse. She loves the area, and she will also be continuing in her chosen profession of flipping homes. There is lot of stigma behind this old house owned by Janet Hardy because she died at such a young age in this house under mysterious circumstances. Many believe she was murdered, while others believe it was simply suicide after the tragic death of her beloved son.

Ford Sawyer returned from vacation to find a presence at the Hardy home. Since no one had lived there since Janet's death, he was suspicious. Upon seeing Cilla, he knew immediately she was a relative due to the striking resemblance. He was taken immediately with the woman he met who was determined to bring the old neglected farm back to life. As construction got underway, he felt more and more drawn to Cilla, but she discouraged him. He knew just from talking to her that she was a mess, but he just couldn't stay away. She kept asking him what a washed up actress afraid of intimacy had in common with a graphic novel author. Ford was constantly throwing Cilla off balance in his pursuit of her.

As Cilla spent more time in this small community, the more she was positive she made the right decision in moving. She was getting to know her father and half sister, and was realizing what she had missed out on. Even her precarious relationship with her mother couldn't sway her from living in her new home. When threats and vandalism endangered the new life she was trying to build, it took all the strength Cilla possessed, not to give up. While Ford and the rest of her extended family rallied around, she was determined to fight for her future hoping the cost wouldn't be her life.

This was a pretty good read, but will not be one of my favorites. The characters were well written, and I enjoyed some of the secondary characters as much or even more than the primary characters. Cilla's down to earth loving father in direct contrast with her diva mother explained a lot about her. Ford's parents were a hoot, but his grandfather was priceless. Spock stole the spotlight! I felt cheated by the lack of development of the suspense plot. It seemed sloppily thrown together as if it were almost an afterthought. Not a keeper!!

Having just found this good author and not having read any of her extension collection I was elated to find her. . then I got this book. . it drags, it wanders, it is boring. Now that didn't stop me. . Nora Roberts is a great story teller and I just got 5 of her books today. . ..this one. . I don't know why it just doesn't have Nora Roberts characters that you love to love or hate.
