When I was 14 and had just finished reading Peyton Place, with parental consent, my father adamantly told me NOT to read the Bramble Bush. At 14 since a girl doesn't usually listen, so of course I read the book. While visiting a cousin this summer, I told her that story, and we both decided to order a copy of the book and find out why it was supposedly a read too "blue" for me as a teen. We have both read the Bramble Bush and have talked at length about its story. The best friend of a local doctor has returned home to die, bringing with him his wife, who while hoping for a miracle falls in love with the doctor. The story also focuses on the history of the town where it takes place and also of past sins and dealings of the town's older citizens. The narrative is quite easy to follow, and the descriptive passages about the town make it come alive and make the coastal New England town seem familiar. The story contains incest, adultery and murder without graphic detail. As a parent now, I would have no qualms of letting one of my children, as a teenager, to read the Bramble Bush.
Well written story of two friends. Reminds me a lot of Peyton Place because of tangled webs the lives of small town Cape Cod characters. Good reading by a talented author.
