This is set during the French revolution and the writing gives a good feel for the uncertainty of the times.
This was an unbelievably BAD book!! I had read another of her books and really liked it so I ordered this one and 4 others.....I sure hope the others are better. I was very disappointed.
I started out almost not finishing this book, but I am glad I stuck with it. I loved the beginning and the end was fantastic. The middle really dragged on. I felt it could have been alot shorter and would improve my rating.

As I said the ending had so much suspense, twists, love, passion, had your heart racing, sometimes I couldn't believe where the author was taking us. Great imagination!!

I didn't realize until I was writing the review, that this is book 2 of the series, but I didn't feel lost in the least. There is lovemaking, which is mildly descriptive, but full of passion and love.

There isn't a cliffhanger, but if you want to know more about the chalice, and the people you met along the way, you will want to continue the series.

Just stick with it, because you will be rewarded. I bought this as a 12 book bundle with 12 different author's, for only $2.99 -well worth the price. (ljb)
Whether you have read the prequel (Mystic Isle) or you are just checking out this book - I can say with certainty that this story will suck you in. If you are a fan of the California Malcolm's series, then this is a must read; as you learn about the origins of a siren.

I'm normally not a fan of this time period, but Patricia sprinkles her magic and makes the story fun to ready, and you learn a little about the things that happened at that time too. Once you give this book a chance, you will want to read the whole series, as there is a common theme throughout the series that ties them all together. For those of you wondering, this is technically Book 2 in the series, but it was the first book in the series published. Mystic Isle, while technically Book 1, was actually the last book to be published and is really a prequel that fills in some blanks the rest of the series does not.
This is a most enjoyable read. Around the time of the French revolution in Breton France, a young woman who has a special ability (mermaid's affinity for the sea and the capability to prove it) encounter a man who was forecast by her mother to be the savior of their town. The problem is he hails from a secret mystical island that regular humans cannot enter. It's located not to far from the coast of Breton. The rest of the novel it their tortured love story with tons of misunderstandings and miscommunication. They have more trouble trying to work out their complicated relationship than we, the readers, do. There is more to the tale in future volumes, I will be sure to check them out. My thanks to LibraryThing for a complimentary copy of this work.
I was really excited to see that Patricia Rice had a new novel out and I couldn't wait to read it. I think the new world Rice has created is interesting, if a little odd. I do think that too many of the island's inhabitants are a little to mysterious, talking in riddles and giving non answers.

I found Trystan to be a little cold in the beginning but I liked that he warmed up quite a bit by the novels end. I really liked Mariel in the beginning but I found her selfish attitude towards her affect on Trystan's life and her stupid actions irritating. It's not like Trystan was being completely unreasonable with what he needed her to do and her often callous disregard for his feelings turned me off.

While I thought Mariel's love for her sister and need to keep her promises to her mother was admirable, she acted like her sister was still a child instead of a grown married woman who I thought needed to learn how to take care of herself. Not to say Trystan was perfect but he was very understanding with Mariel's actions.

It may sound like I didn't like this book a whole lot but I felt the love that Trystan felt for each other was real, the secondary characters were well developed and brought a lot to the story, I liked Mariel a lot better by the story's end, and Rice has set the stage for the upcoming novels in the Mystic Isle series.

So if you want to read a novel about a new world, island mysteries, and alpha males and females then Mystic Guardian is the story for you.
