I have loved this book since I originally read it back in the 90's. I like romances where the characters meet in an unconventional way.
The heroine was engaged to the heros's best friend. From the very beginning the hero chases the heroine. It was love at first sight for him. He was relentless in his pursuit of her. The heroine was cool to him at first. There are all kinds of reasons why she resists and it's interesting to find out why. The hero is a good guy, even though he steals his best friends girl. The jilted fiancé is actually a good guy too (although he is clueless). Robyn Donald actually wrote a book about him to give him to give him a happy ending. I forget the name of the book. The heroine is very likable also. Memorable story and dialog. Great read.
Aura is the h and Flint the H. At the start of the story, Aura is engaged to Paul, and Flint is his friend who is going to be the best man at their wedding. The journey to get past the engagement and having Flint with Aura is an amazing story, with lots of angst.

Loved this story, and can recommend it highly.

What a hideously vile group of characters here. The so-called hero was the worst; heroine not much better, and the ever-clinging, materialistic aggravating mother that annoys everyone but especially the readers is next.

I'm giving a 1 star for vile hero/heroine, but it is a well done book. The writing, the set up and angst are 4 stars.

Aura, the h is engaged to be married and loves Paul. Flint, Paul's best friend from childhood, shows up and jumps right into the you must be a gold-digger trope at first glance. He stalks and molests his BEST FRIEND'S fiancee and warns her she'll never marry Paul. She tries to fight off her attraction to Flint as she really does love her fiancee, but she knows she's not IN love with him. Due to some trauma as a teen and more daddy issues than I want to get into, she has trust issues and is in need of love and stability. Paul provides that plus he doesn't make her skin crawl. Lucky Paul. The fighting-off thing against Flint doesn't work too well as any reader of a Harlequin will know.

Bottom line, Aura realizes that she can't marry Paul although she'll have to put up with her mother's whining and carrying on. Like I said, few good people here. She resolves to tell Paul after a mega grope session with Flint the big fat jerk (BFJ). Well, Flint, BFJ, jumps the gun and stages an intervention along the lines of let's-get-caught by Paul. I want to remind you that these men have been best friends since they were 8 and 9.

Long story short, Paul actually expresses some kinda scary outrage that with another author could have been hot. The engagement is over and fallout begins.

Aura falls into a modeling job. Of course. She ends up running into Flint months later and, yippee, loses her virginity. It's awesome because who is worthier than the man that called you a slut, a gold-digger and betrayed his childhood best friend who defended him as a kid.

Even more months later, her mother is married off to a rich tycoon in Canada (Hallelujah, as the h lives in New Zealand), and BFJ Flint shows up again. He has some of the jewelry she sold to pay off her mother's debt. She explains she is going to move from modeling into accounting and computers as that's her field of study. Color the BFJ surprised as he may lust after her, but he still thinks she's a shallow/user bimbo.

Bottom line, Flint fell in love with at first sight, and there was no way he was going to let her marry Paul. [ He even lied to his BF, and said they had already slept together when they had not. He later admits that even if she had been married to Paul, he would have taken her. She agrees. What honor.

He let her go after the breakup with Paul and after they had sex the first time as she needed to get over her relationship with Paul. Yeah. Uh huh.

Epilogue shows them happy as clams with two kids and a successful winery. Paul shows up and APOLOGIZES for making a fuss. EXCUSE ME! Why THE HECK should YOU apologize? Once again, they acknowledge that nothing could keep them apart even ripping out Paul's heart.

I HATED THESE TWO! Spare me the "We have to be together, Heathcliffian Wuthering Heights love. I just don't buy it. There had to be some way they could have been together without destroying Paul the fiancee. I place the onus on the hero as he was the best friend and the impetus of change.
Best friend Flint decides to snatch Aura away from the groom, Paul. There is this spark between Flint and Aura, problem is that Flint is not the groom to be. Flint thinks he knows all about Aura. He thinks she is just looking to marry a rich man and live the life of leisure. How wrong he is! He calls it protecting his friend when he sits out to save Paul from the gold digger; more like he wants her for himself but doesn't want to admit it. Really not a bad way to pass the time.
The story line is notorious. The groom's best friend tries to snatch the bride away from the groom days before the wedding. The bride and the groom, Aura and Luke, are really a very lovable couple. Flint, on the other hand, is brutal for his predatory nature. He is out to save Luke from a self serving woman. But what Flint really wants is Aura for himself. And finally, when Aura and Luke's relationship ends disastrously, Flint walks away from Aura without remorse. The story should end there. But following the high tradition of romance novels, Robyn Donald tries to patch things up between Flint and Aura which takes a plot of its own. The story was going very well until the unfortunate plot twist. The latter part of the story is not so convincing as the earlier one. I gave it four stars.
I adore my paperback copy of this book - flint and aura have great chemistry. however when i purchased the kindle edition of this book the wrong book downloads. i have called and emailed amazon with no response. i would recommend downloading the first chapter before purchasing this book and make sure it has aura and flint. my first complaint on this one was in July 2012 and as of October 2012 amazon has still not fixed. the real story (again with aura and flint - not the book amazon gives you for the kindle edition) is a great read, if you enjoy other books by Robyn Donald this is a great edition.
