I've met the editor of this theological dictionary. He's a sound man in the faith. Some reviewers expressed concern that he was giving his own opinions instead of their idea of a "straight read" on the subjects covered. He's a solid Reformed Free Presbyterian minister, what did you expect, something from Jacobus Arminius? I have the older version of this dictionary purchased back when I was a much younger Christian; I appreciate this much larger volume and the additional subjects covered.

I have tried to read about theological terms before, but this book really explains them for the amateur and self-taught. Cr. Cairns does not assume his readers have a background in theological studies which is nice. Some readers may find him opinionated, but he certainly is true to his own beliefs. I do not find this a problem, but be aware he is not a fan of eucumenticalism. If you overlook this sort of thing, Dr. Cairns book is a good resource for understanding terms, and it is well written and interesting for the curious.

The best one-volume Theological Dictionary with outstanding accuracy of Biblical Truth. This should be in every preacher's library and regular reading for every believer.

This book is concise, readable, accurate and handy to use. Useful for beginning student and scholar as well. Although I have several like it, I reach for this one most often. GMM

Written from a fundamental, reformed viewpoint, Dr Alan Cairns provides a conservative, concise and accurate resource for the theology student in this well-written volume. There are not many definitive, fundamental, as well as faithful, theological dictionaries available these days; most are usually written to appeal to the general masses of professing, ecumenical "Christendom". Alan Cairns gives a reformed perspective of numerous theological terms, allowing the student to have quick assess to the gist of the subject matter. Useful for both laymen and college students, the definitions are reliably biblical. Dr Cairns does not provide a potpourri of definitions, leaving the student to grasp at straws. He expounds that old time fundamentalist truth in a clear, yet easily digestible format in all its theological intricacies. If the reader is looking for a dictionary that pussyfoots around compromising views, or a volume that condones anything or everything, this is not the right book.
Another fabulous work by Dr. Cairns, minister in the Free Presbyterian Church. Dr. Cairns explains, in abundantly clear and plain language, even the most complex theological ideas and debates of the Christian faith. Another real plus of this book is Dr. Cairns insights on which side(s) of a theological debate have the most Biblical merit.
Theologians everywhere would do well to emulate Dr. Cairns' example, for all too many go out of their way to confuse and obfuscate, rather than illuminate.
Also see Dr. Cairns' book, "Eagles Wings". It is as much a blessing to the heart as this book is to the mind.
