The novel is set in the 1940’s, and appears to be based on a cholera epidemic that devastated Oran in the prior century, in 1849. Oran is ugly, says Camus. There is no design to it. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 in 1957, the second-youngest recipient in history. Camus was born in Algeria to French parents. He spent his childhood in a poor neighbourhood and later studied philosophy at the University of Algiers
