Fantastic book. It was refreshing to read what I have always felt to be the case, which is that we were better off in the 50s and 60s BEFORE civil rights legislation was passed. This book is great. I passed it on to my daughter shortly after reading it.
Dr. Aikins has one of the clearest explorations and explanations of the Black Community's failure to thrive in the modern political culture. This book opened my eyes to the political exploitation of Blacks and the reasons faux Black leaders are unwilling to speak out about systemic issues which would deeply affect their community. It is almost as if these Black leaders need to promote racism in order to promote (and profit) themselves. That their message is not one of individualism and self-reliance, but one of dependency and perpetual subservience.

Dr. Aikins, as a scholar and a civil rights attorney, walks the walk before he talks the talk. I cannot find a more authoritative and unbiased source on Black leadership than While African Americans Slept. I cannot recommend this book more highly.
