No exaggeration. I spent years trying to get my own copy after reading this via inter-library loan.

If you love Downton Abbey or any other Victorian Period piece, you should read what it took to get those "upstairs" ladies looking so fine. This was written as a scholarly work, but is a very easy (if uncomfortable) read.

The book writes about the dress shops and shop girls that worked in them, as well as the drudge work they sent out. You read about women so poor that their children had no blankets except the ball gown skirts they were working on.

I'm very sorry that this book it out of print. If you get your hands on a copy, I think that you will agree with me.

The seamstress wasn't very appreciated and this book reveals the many hardships endured by those who sought to make their living by the needle.
