This book contains the writings by Trotsky from the year 1933 through 1934. Organizationally, Trotsky developed two tactical orientations. During the first part of 1932, Trotsky finished his monumental history called "The Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution is published separately and is not contained in this volume. The first was a continuation of the policy of the Left Opposition during the 1920's. The International Left Opposition as it cohered in 1930 still acted as an external and unjustly expelled faction of the official Communist parties and of the Communist International and oriented itself to winning militants from those organizations.

Leon Trotsky (/ˈtrɒtski/; born Lev Davidovich Bronstein; 7 November 1879 – 21 August 1940) was a Soviet revolutionary, Marxist theorist, and politician whose particular strain of Marxist thought is known as Trotskyism. Leon Trotsky was born Lev Davidovich Bronshteyn, the son of a prosperous Jewish farmer in the Ukraine. Sent to Odessa for his secondary-school education, he became a member of a Marxist circle in 1896. Imprisoned many times, he escaped from exile in Siberia in 1902 by using the name of a jailer called Trotsky on a false passport.

In 1969, Pathfinder Press of New York City began an ambitious plan to print in English everything ever written by he great Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. The plan was however hampered by the fact that a large collection of documents written by Trotsky were held in "closed section" of the Harvard Library. Pursuant to Trotsky's instructions these articles were not to be made available to the public until 1980. Accordingly, the publication of the voluminous writings of Trotsky went ahead without the writings from the closed section of the Harvard Library.

A substantial portion of these writings, written from 1929 until Trotsky's death in 1940, were published in chronological order in the twelve-volume series called "Writings of Leon Trotsky." However between 1969, when the publication of the Writings series began, until 1979 some three hundred, previously unknown or undisclosed articles and letters written by Trotsky were found. Accordingly, two additional volumes were added to the "Writings" series as "Supplemental" volumes in 1979 which contained these articles. This particular book is the second of these Supplemental volumes which contain those newly discovered articles and letters which were written between 1934 and 1940.
