This very large coffee table book is somewhat cumbersome to use but is a very opulent example of book production.
The color photographs and page layouts are outstanding. I especially liked the small outline maps for each site, the mention of UNESCO’s criteria for the inclusion of each site, and the dates of each site’s inscription.
The text is concise and covers essential information about each site, but the primary emphasis is on the full color photographs.
With a copyright date of 2005, it is hoped that the book might somehow be updated to cover newly inscribed UNESCO sites.
If, as a world traveler, you want a lavishly produced book to savor and spend hours looking at, this has to be one of the very best. It is also to be recommended for such a large, illustrated book to be available at such a reasonable price.
I had previously purchased one of those "X" number of UNESCO site books and was very disappointed in the lack and size of photographs for the sites. This book is a quality presentation of the sites chosen for the various sites. Well worth the extra money.
This book will take you breath away. The photos are beautiful and the verbiage informative. This book has shown me how diverse and creative humankind is and has been through the ages. A wonderful book...highly recommended.
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in art, world history, or historic preservation. The editors have done a great job of selecting 110 world heritage sites from the over 700 on the UN list. At first I was disappointed that not all 700 sites are in the book. But as I studied the book I realized that the editors made a wise choice in culling the list to 110. Most of these sites require far more than one photograph to do them justice. Therefore it's better to see multiple photos of 110 sites rather than one photo of 700 sites. For those who feel cheated, there is a complete list of all the sites in the back of the book. You can find pictures of most of these sites on the Internet. But no computer can capture the exquisite colors and large format of the photographs in this book. The written articles about the sites are equally impressive. This is a book I will treasure always. P.S. I found this book at Barnes & Noble for $25. That's far less than the lowest price on Amazon.
I was surprised that there were so few books dedicated to World Heritage Sites, and that the few which existed were so hard to come by. This book, while not claiming to be comprehensive, seemed to offer the best balance between breadth and depth of coverage. (Full coverage, with say at least four pages per site, would require nearly 4000 pages!) It is beautifully produced and the text gives a decent overview of each of chosen sites. I would have gotten this from Amazon had it been available, but thanks to the previous reviewer, I knew to check out Barnes and Noble - ours had a stack of 8 copies in the front bargain gift center for twenty-five dollars, an excellent value.
Couldn't believe I found this at such a good price!
