I enjoyed browsing through the photos of stars of many classic films, as well as a few current stars. I rated this book four stars, as there are a lot of critical movie stars missing. How can a book on movie stars not include any of the Barrymore family? There is nothing on Louis Jordan, Joel McCray, Farley Granger, Lawrence Harvey, Franco Nero, Capucine, and many others. I bought the book "used", because of the significant price difference, and was delighted to receive a "like new" coffee-table book. Kudos to the seller for a great price and condition. It made up for my disappointment at not receiving more of a reference-type book, with some biographical information. I would have been very unhappy had I purchased it at full price only to find it to be a collection of pictures with minimal descriptions. When watching classic films, it would be nice to have a reference book for a quick search on a star, a movie, or other films they made. I will continue to look for such a book, and be content to do a Google search for biographical information on classic stars, after being introduced to their great movies.

Cinema lovers will enjoy this 2005 photo tribute to famous actors and actresses of the silver screen. MOVIE STARS, UNSEEN ARCHIVES is a pleasing combination of hundreds of pix of screen legends from the silent era to 2005 and pithy, insightful commentary by Gareth Thomas; eye candy for movie buffs indeed!

Most of the 350+ b&w and color photographs found in Thomas' book were drawn from the archives of England's DAILY MAIL newspaper. The remainder are from the Getty Archives. Arranged chronologically, the pix are a smorgasbord of candids and standard studio shots showing movie stars at work and play. There are many 'airport arrival' shots, some snaps taken at award ceremonies, wining/dining pix, posing with co-stars/directors photos, family gatherings and so on. About half are full-page.

To me, the joy of paging through MOVIE STARS, UNSEEN ARCHIVES comes from the shots of the truly legendary performers - Bogie and Bacall, Gable, Chaplin, Olivier, Cary Grant, Betty Davis, Errol Flynn, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Cooper, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Bardot, Yul Brynner, etc. Seeing them in their prime - and remembering those long-gone days - is a hoot! Viewing those images brought to mind a book I read years ago on Hollywood character actors entitled THEY HAD FACES THEN. Boy, did they ever. By contrast, the later snaps of Nicholson, Beatty, Eastwood, Potier, Duvall, Stallone, Willis, Penn, etc. were ok.

If you love motion pictures, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of MOVIE STARS, UNSEEN ARCHIVES. It's a great trip down memory lane...and a nice tribute to all those talented people who entertained us on the silver screen. Recommended.
