I thought this book was very well researched, written and has an insight into Bill Hicks that few will have. It is demandingly detailed and supportive of the feelings and spirituality that Hicks' promoted and lived in his all too short 32 years. I applaud the author greatly as this is the book I would have wished to have written, but am thankful he did it so I could enjoy his work! The author is a comedy afficianado and shares a special understanding the craft after Hicks' passing. I only wish this book were more touted and read and discussed. Long live BillHicks. Impeach Trump. Bill Hicks Lives!

I got the paperback of this book on the U.K. Amazon site after much tracking down. It was well worth the effort. Paul Outhwaite's book traces the cultural and political background to Hicks' material as well as offering and insight into his influences, style and attitude to audiences. There's a great chapter comparing his physical comedy to Richard Pryor. The real joy of this book is the way that Outhwaite, like Hicks, seeks to make connections. In the book, Hicks' comedy is compared with George Orwell's writing, the science-fiction genre and spirituality, whilst the last two chapters seek to look at how his comedy can be applied to world events since his death. Imaginative and very readable, it's a shame it hasn't yet been released in the States.
