by Randy Poe

Randy Poe takes the mystery out of music publishing, explaining what it's all about and what it means to you as a songwriter. You'll learn how songwriters and music publishers earn performance royalties, mechanical royalties, synchronization royalties and print royalties in the United States and abroad. And you'll learn all your publishing options - from a single song contract, to a full-time position as a staff writer, to starting your own publishing company. New in this totally updated edition, Poe describes changes in copyright law; discusses how "new media" such as CD-ROM, the Internet and sampling are impacting your rights and income as a songwriter; and includes an expanded section on these rights.

Very good information indeed for a beginning songwriter. An excellent description of how the music publishing (as opposed to performance and record companies) works. I deducted 1 star since I really wished he had taken a total beginner from writing his first song to getting it actually published with an explanation of what to bring/send to a publisher, how to approach the publisher, etc. from a beginner's point of view.

I recommend this book!

Very informative
Just try to find a clearer, more concise book on music publishing. It's not at there. And while you're at it, pick up a copy of Sky Dog, his biography of Duane Allman. Randy Poe has vast experience in the music business, does his research and presents his topics in a crystal clear style.
I had read this book in an earlier edition a few years ago but felt I needed it at hand to sort the array of questions they are not easily crossed off my long list. As I step into the business of music publishing Randy Poe will be with me. I have read other books but this is the best.----Mr Dubya
I read this book as research for starting my own record label. I came away fully understanding music copyright. I also decided to do my own music publishing as a result of the book.

I made this book required reading for my colleagues. It's got interesting history of the publishing business, as well as number-crunching examples of money deals.
It's a proven fact that you can't know enough about the music bizz, and this book proves it.
Good starter reference
