I cannot say enough good about this fiddle book. It gives approx 3 different solos , with notes written in the book for those of you who don't like to learn by ear, to around 14 diff standards. The first is the basic melody, the next 2 are more artistic solos and often harder. There are some songs where there is backup. This was far superior to other fiddle instruction books I have. If you are familiar with a computer program called "the amazing slowdowner" you can use this with the cd's and learn all solos by ear.
I also really liked a great number of Licks in these songs. If you are looking for licks, check out the John Hardy for key of G and Sittin on top of the world for A licks. A wonderful resource for good licks that you can throw in other tunes (if you know how to do that). Or you can just play his arrangements (wich are excellent).
I've got to agree with the other reviewers. This is a great book. Start with the melody, then work up to the solos. Add in the fill licks. It all comes together. Wish there were more books like this. Darol Anger is great to listen to and work from. And yes, you really do need to slow it down to learn. And it's not for beginners.
Love, love, love this book!! I am advanced beginner to intermediate fiddler and I find this book challenging but definitely playable. I love the backup music. I actually transfered the CD into my Amazing Slowdowner app and play it at a slower tempo until I perfect it, then speed it up and practice until I can play at tempo. The arrangements are really interesting.
great book for my students
