My voice teacher had me buy this song cycle after reading an article about Ricky Ian Gordon in some magazine, and I'm performing three of them in my voice recital next semester.

They all have a casual, musical theater-esque quality to them... but that does not mean they're simple to read or easy to sing by any means. You need a good pianist who can feel the emotions with you since there is a LOT of interplay between voice and piano in most of the songs.

You can perform them in any order since they are all separate poems (the only unifying thread is that they're all poems by Langston Hughes), and most of the songs are all over the place in terms of key schemes.

If you're looking for repertoire that's accessible but sophisticated, straightforward and emotional, and relatively unknown, buy this song cycle. Some of the poetic texts are rather oddly-set, but there are several in the book that truly shine.

Once again Ricky Ian Gordon has won with the song cycle Genius Child. I just wish I could meet and really talk to him about where his music emerges from within him. Outstanding! My favorite piece starts off about a girl dreaming of a piano and the stepwise motion in the accompaniment is so on point.

I adore these songs!! Will there really Be a morning is one of the most gorgeous art song I know. The melody is absolutely gorgeous and the piano part just so well-written, like all his songs. And Joy is just amazing. The writing - piano part is big and virtuosic- the vocal line gorgeous and memorable. Love them, and love performing this music of one of the great craftsman of American song.

This song cycle is a gem! The poetry is wonderful and the music can be sung by college age students.

I found Ricky Ian Gordon through a search for Audra MacDonald, as I love her work. I found her on a CD of songs by Mr. Gordon, called "Bright Eyed Joy" and fell in love with that song and many others on the album. Some of those songs appear in this collection, along with interesting notes by Gordon on the circumstances surrounding the songs. I haven't been this excited about new music in a long time. Can't wait to perform some of it.
