by Maria Naylor,James McNeill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) ranks among the greatest of modern etchers, and this compilation features the best of his work in this genre. Here are 149 outstanding examples of his etchings and drypoints, most in the original size, and all reproduced with exceptional quality.Appealing subjects include views of wharfs and bridges; street scenes from London, Amsterdam, and Venice; and portraits. Popular individual prints presented are "Black Lion Wharf," 'Rotherhithe," "Annie Haden," "Zaandam," "The Storm," "Little Venice," "The Palaces," "Portrait of Whistler," "The Village Sweet-Shop," "The Two Doorways," "St. James's Street," "Fanny Leyland," "Longshoremen," "Old Battersea Bridge," "Nocturne," and many others. The famous sets are also well represented: the complete French set, the Thames set, and the two Venice sets.Editor Maria Naylor has provided an insightful introduction and an explanatory note for each print, giving Kennedy catalog number, the particular state illustrated, the medium, the original dimensions (in the few cases where illustrations have been reduced), and the set to which the print belongs (where applicable). An excellent reference for those already acquainted with Whistler's etchings, this volume also makes a fine introduction.

If you are a printmaker or a student of printmaking, you MUST have this book. Katharine Lochnan tells Whistler's life story in detail, within the context of his time and with clarity. The many superb reproductions are a gold mine of the etcher's art. While Whistler was an expatriate most of his life and living between Paris and London, America still claims him as one of the greatest of all U.S. artists. If anyone has any doubts, this book illustrates why Whistler's prints rank with those of Goya, Blake and yes, even Rembrandt van Rijn. This is the Yale/Ago exhibition catalog of 1984, NOT the Dover publication mentioned in the product description under Editorial Reviews.
A terrific book!
Nice book but nothing special. Totally misrepresented. Several good etchings are missing. Bought as gift at 46.00 will be returning. Now less than a week later book is listed by same dealer for 128.00 along with an equal bump in all other copies listed. Pay the 4.00 for the dover reprint.
Went to an art exhibit in Kentucky which included some etchings by Whistler which I loved. Bought this book when I returned home. It is a lovely book. Love the etchings of Venice, Italy.
fast. as described.
