Series: British Museum Objects in Focus. A concise and beautifully designed book exploring the symbolism behind an exquisite Ancient Babylonian plaque found in southern Iraq.
Series: British Museum Objects in Focus. This spectacular terracotta plaque was the principal acquisition for the British Museum's 250th anniversary, and in 2004 was exhibited in various museums around the UK. Made between 1800 and 1859 BC, it is made from baked straw-tempered clay and modelled in high relief. It probably stood in a shrine and could represent the demoness Lilitu, known in the Bible as Lilith, or a Mesopotamian goddess.

According to Dr. Dominique Collon of the British Museum the plaque was made b. .clay pressed into a mould and allowed to dry in the su. he figure was made from fairly stiff clay which was folded and pushed into a specially shaped mould, with more clay added and pressed in behind to form the plaque. Thus the Queen’s figure is an integral part of the plaque and was not added to it later. The god from Ur is so close the Queen of the Night in quality, workmanship and iconographical details that it could well have come from the same workshop, perhaps at Ur, where extensive remains of the Old Babylonian period were excavated between 1922 and 1934.

These books are fabulous. The British Museum certainly knows it's customers. An interesting focus on just one item in the museum. And there are many more that cover the most interesting pieces in the museum. A well written booklet about The Queen of the Night with archaeological and historical information, as well as great illustrations. Apr 22, 2014 Marta Fabianek rated it really liked it. A good short guide to the Queen of the Night. Underlining short here.
