TASCHEN's 25th anniversary - Special edition! New design, new low price! The most famous botanical record ever committed to paper: Basilius Besler's complete Book of Plants of 1613 A magnificent pictorial document of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, the Book of Plants is in a class of its own when it comes to the variety and range of flowers engraved. Working under Basilius Besler, a team of at least ten engravers worked on this massive project, translating in situ and specimen drawings faithfully to copper plates. Nearly four hundred years old, the book has survived though the gardens did not; they were destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1634. However, in 1998 a reconstruction of the original garden opened to the public in Eichst?tt. This facsimile's reproductions - structured by seasons - are taken from a hand-painted edition, one of only a few still extant. In auction, the asking price for a first edition copy is half a million dollars. You can now enjoy its unique qualities for somewhat less.

I am a newbie to this realm,,, though yes, i have seen flowers and drawings, even drawings of flowers... but this
book makes me warm inside! its lovely! i dont spend a lot of the little money i make but i heard good things!! all true!
its worth it cause in the long run youll spend more time looking at it than painting the town red :")
Nice book
Large 'coffee table' variety book with beautiful vintage botanical prints. I plan to take pages out to frame some of them.
Wonderful illustrations. I have framed many of them to make up a classic botanical gallery in my entry hall--exactly what I was looking for.
This book is so pretty! Very large and heavy-SSS made it happen for me as well a a great price!
I want to say that this book is more of an historical volume than a scientific or artistic volume for practical purposes today.I am an artist, and bought it thinking I might have some leads to designing in my own work.It did not have this special quality-artistic inspiration -to do that for me,yet-it is a very special book, albeit a collection of what we know know as predictable old world botanical illustrations. Yet I like it. I don't love it.
-But ,I like it, alot. Do not buy it if you are an art student, there are other books out on the market for consideration. If you are someone who would like to frame alot of old world botanical illustrations to decorate your home, you will like this volume.
What I admire is the dedication to the artist of this book, that had the stamina to get it published,400 years ago.
Although I never seen the original engravings to compare to the prints (there are only a couple of complete collections), I had for many years admired the strength and decorative appeal of the reproductions, themselves. But I was unable to find any publication with more than one or two engravings reproduced. Then one day, as I was perusing new titles and "bargain books" in Barnes and Noble, there it was! Bonanza! the complete book of engravings, handsomely reproduced with a scholarly historical text. I snapped it up immediately and have always counted it among the best book purchases, ever. I collect art in varied media, and I can say unequivocally that this volume stacks up quite well in terms of providing multiple examples of a joyful artistic imagination and shear visual beauty. But in addition, because it replicates the complete engravings, it provides an inexhaustible source of interest and enjoyment. Never have plants had such a colorful and exciting presentation. Besler is the king of botanical illustrators.
