This manual provides support for a thorough treatment approach to addition. As evidenced in the preview, the manual is divided into three sections: an overview, behavior change issues, and relapse prevention issues. The treatment modality focused on is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), although many of the principles and practices outlined might fit into/work alongside other approaches. The informing method is harm reduction as opposed to immediate abstinence (note this refers to short-term, not long-term goals), an approach that is associated with better outcomes in the literature.

As an adjunct to therapy the manual is helpful, as it covers many common concerns about the treatment process. It is fairly clear, making it readable by most clients.

Dennis Daley's workbook provides the user with exercises that assist in learning to apply strategies to overcome alcohol dependence. It is helpful to be exposed to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, but in providing exercises to guide the user towards applying the theoretical to the practical challenge of overcoming dependence Daley gives us a valuable tool in the fight against addiction. The book can be used as a reference, I found it more beneficial to use it this way. I revisit the book regularly to keep the strategies familiar and ready for use when needed.

My experience has been that individuals working alone or clients working with therapists are not sufficiently motivated to utilize this book.

I feel this book was printed just to make money. The author over simplifies the disease of addiction. Don't waste your money.

As a clinical social worker who has worked over 7 years in both inpatient and outpatient addiction settings, I have found this workbook extremely helpful in treating patients who have substance abuse and dependence issues. I completely disagree with the one-star review.
