adoption of non-alignment as the lodestar of India’s foreign policy. various international for and especially in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
At least two factors can be adduced to explain Nehru’s adoption of non-alignment as the lodestar of India’s foreign policy. First, he was acutely concerned about the opportunity costs of defense spending. To that end, India’s diplomacy was carefully geared to the discussion of the issue at various international for and especially in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). In the region, it referred the Kashmir dispute with Pakistan to the United Nations for possible resolution. Some within India’s parliament called for an abandonment of nonalignment and even urged that India acquire an independent nuclear weapons option.
Thus non alignment is antialliance and anticold war. It advocates independent point of view and friendly relations with all countries. Rajan nonalignment stands for ad hoc decision on international problems keeping their own interest in view. It is principle that lays emphasis on international peace and security and pleads for noninvolvement in Cold War and military pacts. The origins of the concept of nonalignment can be discerned in the speeches of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
