I am beginning to learn Astrology, but I have been programming computers since 1974. I have had a tremendous interest in developing my own Open-Source Astrological Software in Objective-C for the Mac. I did some research on the internet and found that this is the seminal book for Astrological Software development. It was available through Amazon from Arb-Salvage. The book arrived in excellent condition exactly on the expected delivery date.

While much of the material in the book is outdated (It was written in 1980) the meat of the book and the concepts of Astrological Calculation are Universal and I am easily translating the concepts into Objective-C for an alpha test program.

As one reads this book, one can see the breadth of knowledge Erlewine has on the subject of Astrology and programming as it was in the 1980's. He starts with an easy introduction of the Microsoft Basic language that ran on microprocessors in the early 1980's. But immediately afterwards, the book goes in to the overall theory writing a Harmonic Chart Program. He then, goes into program optimization concepts that are really no longer applicable in today's world of computers, but that I remember very well using while programming in the 1970's and 80's.

He builds the program up by developing several Utility Subroutines and then Coordinate Transformation, Date Calculation, House System Calculations, Planet Calculations (even calculations for some important Asteroids), Chart Wheel Format, Aspect-Scope and how to generate Tables for interpretation.

When I ordered this book, I expected the programming language to be outdated, but I expected to get some guidance on basic Astrological Calculations. This book exceeded my expectations.

This is a true classic. I just wish that Michael Erlewine might take time out of his understandably busy schedule (Musician, Activist, Astrologer, Author) to update this very important work.

Published in 1979, this was the first book to make the complex astronomical calculations used by astrologers available to the general public. Last I knew, it could still be ordered from Matrix Software at 1-800-PLANETS.

This is a great book. It's the book that inspired me to go to college to become a computer programmer. It is also out of print. Tanya Guild at Matrix Software, [...] says they no longer sell the book. Too bad....
