Borderline personality disorder is a severe and complex psychiatric condition that, until recently, many considered nearly untreatable. But this optimistic guide to BPD provides information that will bring newfound hope to those who have this painful disorder, and to their family and friends.

People with borderline personality disorder have problems coping with almost everything, and therefore anything can provoke them to impulsive actions, angry outbursts, and self-destructive behaviors. Their personal relationships are simultaneously overly dependent and strained, if not openly hostile, and frequently explosive. Incorporating the latest research and thinking on the disorder, Johns Hopkins psychiatrists Francis Mark Mondimore and Patrick Kelly conceptualize it in an original way. They explain that symptoms are the result of biological and behavioral problems, extremes of temperament, and impaired psychological coping, all of which may have a relationship with traumatic life events.

The authors advocate a therapeutic approach incorporating compassion and optimism in the face of what is often a tumultuous disease. With proper treatment, people with borderline personality disorder can enjoy long remissions and improved quality of life.

If you're Borderline, or know someone who is (friend or family), you need this book. I have several other BPD books (I have Bipolar *and* Borderline..I know, lucky me) and they are all essentially the same in that they cover similar topics, BUT each emphasizes or covers one thing or another better than the other or in a different way, at least. This book explores MORE than just BPD; it discusses things like personality- what it is, when a personality issue becomes 'disorder' and does a fantastic job of really giving a very, very well-rounded picture of Borderline in terms of the illness and the 'other' things that go along with it. There is the stereotypical discussion on other mood disorders and depression (which I ignored because I've heard it so many times), but overall this book is excellent and should certainly be in your repertoire.
Best BPD book I've read so far. It focuses on science and solutions, without demonizing people who have BPD. Do yourself a favor and skip "I Hate You! Don't Leave Me!" Current research clearly shows that, with treatment, BPD is "the good prognosis diagnosis. "
A decent book on borderline personality disorder - if the reader is a member of the general public with limited exposure to other points of view. I felt the prognosis as portrayed by the authors was a bit rosy - but perhaps they're experience justifies such a view.
This is a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of bpd. It reads more like a textbook than a self help book, which can make it a slow read at times, but it's still understandable. This book doesn't give a lot of practical suggestions for dealing with BPD on a day-to-day level, but it provides an excellent background for understanding bpd and potential treatment approaches.
I have a friend who just received this diagnosis and this book helps explain the disorder very well for the lay person. Buy it because you won't be disappointed. It would be nice if the person diagnosed would read it as well but that is not likely to happen unless they are curious as to why they behave a certain way and why their lives are in such turmoil. This is a must read for Borderlines and their families.
This book goes into a lot of detail but is easy to understand and offers enough insight that I, as the mother of a daughter with BPD can now understand what she is having to deal with day in and day out. She loves the highs so she won't take her meds. However, when she needs to talk I can more easily ease her pain.
The title says it all: it really does give new reasons for hope. As a person with (newly-diagnosed) BPD, this has been wonderful. It offers succinct information on what BPD is, its history, and treatment options. It's been an excellent addition to my library.
This book presents a clear description and discussion of BPD. It is a very positive book which presents techniques for managing the disorder as well as practical advice for family and friends. Technical parts are easy to follow and the inclusion of anecdotal examples is a good feature. I would recommend this book to anyone with BPD or anyone dealing with someone with BPD.
