Divulging Utopia: Radical humanism in sixteenth-century English. A study of European utopias in context from the early years of Henry VIII's reign to the Restoration, this book is the first comprehensive attempt since J. C. Davis' Utopia and the Ideal Society (1981) to understand the societies projected by utopian literature from Thomas More's Utopia (1516) to the political idealism and millenarianism of the mid-seventeenth century.

In 16th-century Christianity, Protestantism came to the forefront and marked a significant change in the Christian world. Often the division between magisterial and radical reformers was as or more violent than the general Catholic and Protestant hostilities. The Protestant Reformation spread almost entirely within the confines of Northern Europe but did not take hold in certain northern areas such as Ireland and parts of Germany. The Church of England was the national branch of the Catholic Church. The formal doctrines had been documented in canon law over the centuries, and the Church of England still follows an unbroken tradition of canon law.
