This is by Kingfisher. It is a mini-encyclopedia that strictly covers planet earth in more depth than the Usborne or Kingfisher Science encyclopedias do. The book is 5/16" thick. The text is set up just like the larger encyclopedia volumes. The reading is definitely grade 4+. My 3rd grader can read it, but help him understand it. We usually take turns reading or I read picking up the parts I want him to concentrate on. There is a vocabulary list in the back. The pages are laid out the same as the larger encyclopedias so assigning reading is fairly straight forward. We homeschool and I am using this book as my Earth Science spine. I am supplementing it with a myriad of other living books including Journey to the Center of the Earth for a read aloud. We are using this for our 3rd grade son however, I would keep this around for 6th grade too when we go further in depth on the subject.
This is a nicely illustrated, colorful book on earth science including geology and an environmental section, that is an excellent supplemental book for earth science. The material parallels 8th grade public school curriculum, but is also suitable for any lower grades down to about 2nd grade.

It is very well-designed, beautiful graphics, clear and easy to follow. It has a generous on-topic glossary and is well-indexed. Besides details on earth science, the last several chapters, like 8th grade science curriculum, discusses pollution, environmental issues and conservation.

This would be a very helpful supplemental classroom science book for all students.
This book was recommended by "The Well Trained Mind" as a second grade earth science textbook. It is the perfect "starter" volume to begin a study of the earth. Each topic has two pages, with a lot of illustrations and explanations, to whet the appetite, and encourage follow-up reading and study. Major topics include the land, water, weather, landscapes, and conservation.

This book is a very good book for many children. There are many details and I recommend this book to any teacher that has a small library in their classroom.
It's a great book and I'm MAD about Geography. The more info I can get the better.
