the monster
This book is a very enjoyable read for those who love the style of Jane Austen and lament the sorry lack of style in contempory authors. I've read it three or four times now and would not know where Ms. Austen's writting leaves off and Ms. Dobbs writting begins if she herself didn't tell us in her "Apology from the Collaborator" at the end of the book. All charactors stay in charactor, so to speak, and the story unfolds very logically. Apparently it was written/completed 30 years ago and I am very sorry Marie Dobbs never wrote anything else. The story sparkles with gentle Austen humor throughout and to the very end.
Bludworm
I am a very particular reader and refuse to read all of the trash put out that is supposed to be like Jane Austen. I have to say that Marie Dobbs did a fantastic job of completing "Sandition". She had a very light hand and although I believe that if Jane Austen had completed the book it would have been an even greater work,in praise of Ms. Dobbs I have reread the book every summer since I bought the book two years ago. "Sandition" now is on my list of books that must be read at the beginning of summer, the first being "Pride & Prejudice" followed by one or two comedies by William Shakespeare. I felt that she wrote with total respect but that her own style came through in a very subtle manner that as a Jane Austen fan I found engaging. I didn't feel that she tried to imitate but she showed her own incredible talent and her knowledge of Jane Austen's work and the time period in which she lived. I frequently look to see if she has published anything else. I am fond of 19th Century writers, but I would definitely buy a novel written by Marie Dobbs. She has her own unique talent and is not an imitator. Brava!!!
