Only 15 left in stock (more on the way). This is a great book. It gives a comprehensive view of what math is really about, not about how to do math. It covers the fundamental issues as to the nature of mathematical entities and related problems all the way from ancient times to the present. Rather, it is about contemporary mathematics and dealing with the real problems and synthesizing them. Ultimately, you should be reading Peirce (If you haven’t heard of him. he is America’s greatest polymathic genius and probably belongs in the company of Leibniz, Kant, Plato, Aristotle.
Thinking about Mathematics: The Philosophy of Mathematics. This book presents a theory of mathematics that argues our abilities in math come from perception leading to elementary mathematical knowledge on which is built the edifice of further theory. At the moment I am reading two other books that reminded me of this argument. One is Retrieving Realism by Charles Taylor and Hubert Dreyfus and the other is Seeing Things as They Are by John Searle (which I have just barely begun) that both strike me as trying to do something similar.
Nature of Mathematics, 1. .has been added to your Cart. Terrific book on the fundementals of mathematics, and a detailed background to further build your knowledge base. He has written over 36 mathematics textbooks and believes that students can learn mathematics if it is presented to them through the use of concrete examples designed to develop original thinking, abstraction, and problem-solving skills. Over one million students have learned mathematics from Karl Smith's textbooks. 17 Chapters starting with "Problem Solving" and working up to "Fundemental Calculus.
Part I describes questions and issues about mathematics that have motivated philosophers since the beginning of intellectual history. Part II is an historical survey, discussing the role of mathematics in the thought of such philosophers as Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Mill.

The Nature of Mathematics book. As a retired statistician and astronomer I think of mathematics as a tool for describing what we observe, without worrying about its philosophical basis. Not so the author, for whom the proposition "1 + 1 2" means "if x and y are members of 1, and x differs from y, then x and y together make up a member of . To me this is making heavy weather of it.

Mathematics is the science of working on anything and a mathematician is a job in which you have to adapt to any situation. A computer is a machine which able to perform mathematical tasks. At a time where nobody knows what future jobs will look like, it is obvious that computers will continue to dominate the world in algorithms and mathematical tools will be used more and more in every kind of business.
