by Chris Serb

In 1925, a young lifeguard named Sam Leone took charge of Rogers Park Beach, a broken-up stretch of shoreline with a spotty safety record. Over the next 40 years, Sam whipped his guards into a well-trained unit, racked up an incredible reputation for safety, and built his junior guard program into the biggest and best recreational program in the city. Sam's Boys takes the first comprehensive look at this little-known but all-important slice of Chicago's past: the story of Sam Leone and the history of the beach that now bears his name.

Brought back so many memories of my childhood in Rogers Park and as a member of the summer camp Junior Lifeguard program! I also learned so much about Sam Leone that I never knew! He was truely a remarkable person who cared about kids, and cared enough to help them develop into responsible and civically contributing adults! The book is illustrated with many photos of Sam, Chicago lifeguards, and junior lifeguard activities!

Wonderful book about the time when I was growing up there. Brought back some good memories and found some of my old photos from the 30`s to 40`s of mine.
