The Sächsische Weltchronik ("Saxon World Chronicle") is a universal history written in vernacular German prose between 1229 and 1277. The twenty-four surviving manuscripts are a mix of Low German (ten), High German (nine) and Central German (five). The 98-line verse prologue is always in High German. The Weltchronik is the oldest historical work in German prose.

Weltchronik; Unknown, Rudolf von Ems (Austrian, about 1200 - 1254), Jansen Enikel, Brother Philipp; about 1400–1410 . The Getty Museum's version of the World Chronicle is a large book, six inches thick, copied and illuminated around 1400 to 1410.

Of the many surviving versions of this important example of Middle High German literature, the Museum's copy is the most lavishly decorated, containing more than 380 miniatures.

Hartmann Schedel’s Weltchronik, or Chronicle of the World (better known today as the Nuremberg Chronicle, after the German city in which it was. In case you don’t read Early Modern High German, the comprehensive booklet, with summaries of the book’s main stories, provides a user-friendly way to explore this amazing historical masterpiece. Stephan Füssel is director of the Institute for Book Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, and holder of the Gutenberg Chair at the same university. He has published prolifically on the early days of printing, the sale and publication of books between the 18th and 20th centuries, and the future of communications.
