The cover of the book was a bit torn up (minor), but other than that it was in great condition.
My 8 yr old son loves this series! It has finally gotten him into reading on his own, and he is very proud to be reading chapter books with very little drawings in it! He feels like a grown up. It doesn't seem to overwhelm him from the size of some of the other children's chapter books.
I am the reading partner for a grandchild in an accelerated reading program and the book arrived as promised, and was extremely interesting and well written.
I particularly liked books one and two of this series, but I was a bit disappointed by book three, ("City of the Rats"). It seemed that book three sort of wandered around with odd sub-plots, until it all came together nicely at the end. Having just finished this volume four, I see the interesting pattern that Rodda is following.

Like book three, this one wanders away from the main storyline about one-third of the way in. There is then a very lengthy portion that is just totally tangential to the companion's quest. Then, there is a wham-bang ending, where what happened in the middle comes back to illuminate the closing action. Very clever and very satisfying.

The beauty of this is that it breaks the possible tedium of "kill the monster, get the gem" that would have set in book after book. After all, we need to find and defeat seven monsters. It's hard to keep that interesting. But Rodda, by putting an apparently unrelated and diverting adventure in the middle of each quest, has managed to avert that tedium, and provide for satisfying surprise endings. Pretty cool and very impressive.
Lief, Barda, and Jasmine have left the City of the Rats behind. Now they trek across the endless, barren plain outside the city, determined to find a village so they can obtain the food and supplies needed to travel on to their next destination - the Shifting Sands. They are lucky enough to find a village - but Rithmere is a very strange village. There, the three companions enter a contest in the hopes of winning money to purchase supplies - unknowing that they have entered a brutal fighting match. Even if they emerge triumphant, they will have to evade capture by the evil Shadow Lord's Gray Guards, and, worst of all, face the terrible danger found in the Shifting Sands. The thrilling Deltora Quest fantasy series continues with this exciting book. I can't wait to read the next story, which will take Lief, Barda, and Jasmine to Dread Mountain, where the fifth gem of the Belt of Deltora will be found. I reccomend this book to all readers who enjoyed the first three books in the series.
Have you ever read a book that you had to have a mug of coffee beside you to read or you'd be put to sleep. With this book you'd better have a jar of sleeping pills beside because it is so captivating and action packed unless some brave knight in armor comes to rescue you you'll be reading it all night and fail the test you have in the morning. Okay, Okay it's not that interesting (or that long) but I nearly pulled a "C" average in Science because I was reading it instead of listening to old lady Atkins drone on, and on. Beleive me that is the preferred thing to do. If you buy this awesome book you won't be able to put it down for an hour. But pick an opurtune hour to be entertained by it if you care about your grade average...
The party of three is traveling to the Shifting Sands for the fourth gem, when they decide to enter the Rithmere Games. Great food and housing for practically free. They wonder why all of Deltora isn't entering. They find out the hard way. The Games are a fighting game, with nothing prohibited. Jasmine comes out Champion, while Lief and Barda are finalists. Now they have enough money to fund the rest of their trip, but when they are tricked, what will happen? By help of a stranger called Doom, they are able to continue to the Shifting Sands, where many new dangers await them.
After leaving the dreaded city of the rats, Lief, Barda and Jasmine cross barren wastelands to obtain supplies and food for their next destination. They find a busy town Rithmere and enter a fighting contest which they win.But even though they come out with jewels and riches they are kidnapped by the evil grey guards and taken to a secret hide-out, the hide-out of the adventuring Doom, and his resistence. There they are taken prisoner, will they ever be able to reach their next destination, the invincible and rather evil sands, the shifting sands? This book is a little dull and is losing the context the pre books had. It's still good!
