James Bowman Lindsay was born in Cotton of West Hills, Carmyllie near Arbroath in Angus, Scotland, son of John Lindsay, farm worker, and Elizabeth Bowman. During his childhood he was trained as a handloom weaver. However at the same time he educated himself and his parents recognised their son's potential

He was the executor of his father's will in 1751 and served as guardian of his brother Joseph. On 18 November 1747 he had bought 175 acres of the Borden tract adjoining John Matthews, Moses Trimble, and John Huston on Timber Ridge, Augusta Co. VA. He bought an adjoining tract on 21 Aug 1754, and sold 241 acres to Joseph Reed on 17 May 1765. He disappears from the Augusta Co. records about this time, and appears in the Henry Co. VA tax list in 1779 and 1780.

The immigrant John Gray probably came to Virginia with Benjamin Borden in 1737, and bought a tract in Orange Co on waters of James River, NW side of Timber Ridge, in 1742. His wife was named Agnes, surname unknown. Their children, as listed in John's will, were Jacob, William, David, Joseph, Benjamin, Ann, Samuel, John, and Elizabeth. Samuel Gray bought land in the Borden tract himself in 1747, and was executor of his father's.
