What a great presentation of a time in our country when we actually built things. The City of Alameda is currently attempting to remove one of the old United Engineering Company (Todd Shipyard) cranes as they feel it presents a hazard. They paid someone to create a 100+page environmental impact study. I suspect it took longer to create the study than it did to build the crane. Heck, back then they were building ships faster than it likely took to produce the report. That's it in a nutshell: we have gone from making things to creating pieces of paper and declaring them "valuable". Enough ranting- get the book!

This is an excellent book on shipbuilding in the San Francisco Bay Area durring WWII. Covering Marinship in Saucalito, Kaiser shipbuilding in Richmond, Moore drydock in Oakland, the navy yards at Mare Island and Hunters Point and many smaller operations. It shows how shipbuilding changed the Bay Area.

... and it was the only place we could find it. Great service from third-party seller, too!
