by Arunas A. Chesonis and David Dorsey

When you put people first, you win. When you operate by the highest principles, you'll see the results in the bottom line. When you put a caring heart into how you operate, in your organization and your community, you build the only true foundation of long-term success. This is how PAETEC Communications has enjoyed an astonishing rise during an era when telecommunications has become an ethical, legal and financial quagmire. In this book, CEO Arunas Chesonis and his people tell how, by following a handful of basic ethical principles, their company has emerged as an example of how to succeed in the twenty-first century, not just in telecom, but in any industry.

PAETEC is a sizeable Telecom company with other core businesses that continue to operate in Rochester, NY. I have always enjoyed reading about Arunas Chesonis, the CEO as he finished his MBA at the University of Rochester's Simon School and opened what is now a large company in Rochester, NY. This does not happen that much anymore in Rochester, NY or even Western/Central NY (hell, even in NY outside of NYC).

I love the first chapter is "Putting People First". This easily could have been the last chapter or tucked away in the middle, but he starts right off about how he loves his employees and creating a great culture and atmosphere to do great work.

In another chapter, "Share the Knowledge" I love the line about deciding in their sales ranks what to charge the customer. "Go to the profit model and figure out what works for us and the customer. If your customer wants two cents a minute, tell him how much business he has to give us to get to that rate." I found this to be great advice about how to sell your services, meet your customer's needs, and to grow your business all at the same time.

Several other chapters contain good advice on responding with care, making it personal and other strong advice about customer care. It's about nurturing your business and allowing the employees to make decisions on how to solve problems.

In sum, a great book about how to grow your business the right way in the post Enron business environment while learing lessons from the Dot.Com businesses of the late nineties.

Also, the book is printed through RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) which is really cool. PAETEC is looking to put their World Headquarters in downtown Rochester where I can look out my window and see where it will be built.
I read 'It isn't Just Business' about a month ago and was genuinely surprised at the methods and philosophy utilized to grow PAETEC from start up to over $1 billion in under a decade. While entertaining, the book is really a road map of how to build a great company. I speak with CEOs about business models virtually ever day; PAETEC is what I would define as a truly special organization.

Companies like PAETEC help make Rochester, New York a great community to work and live in. Having only been founded in 1998, and making a few thousand dollars that year, to becoming a $1B company in 2007 is not just a local success, but a human achievement of historic proportions. It addresses a most basic need of human beings: to communicate with one another. What the company offers outside is really a reflection of what is inside: employees who are treated as human beings and are encouraged to communicate with one another to learn, to work, and to prosper. Also have fun. This book is their story.
