I realized that racism influenced the history of our state, but Almaguer does a brilliant job at revealing the degree to which this sad statement is true. This is an importnat book for anyone who lives in California, especially for those involved in governemnt, business, or public education. Racism has had a real effect on our state and people of color, and it contineus to today. The knowledge contained in this book can help us move away from our mistakes and better understand how public action and government policies can change things, for better or worse.
Racial Fault Lines is an intense and informative book. The reading is clear and easy to accomplish. The book price, shipping and delivery was an added pleasure. Thank you very much.
Arrived promptly, said on description it was used and may have highlighter marks/notes, Had NONE! got a brand new book for used price woohoo! not even that bent line books get when you open the cover ... Interesting and informative. He uses lots of examples and makes his points very clear and interesting to read. I have the priviledge of being in his class-History of Latinos in the US. at Sf State and let me just say that Almaguer rocks my socks! Unfortunately I had to rush through it to get my essay in on time, but I am holding on to it and re-reading it over break, good book. :)
This book has lots of importatant information in regards to the history of California. You will be amazed by the facts devulged in this book and even compare to present california laws which are still in effect in regards to people of color. Its incredible what people in power will do to keep their power and the effect it has on the people who helped build the state of California. Excellent book and a must have for all, especially Californian's.
Great work..

A great book that analyzes the historical experiences of people of color in the United States. Very much recommended.
Almaguer has given us a useful history of racial attitudes and white supremacy in nineteenth century Cali. Avoiding a "binary"-- or black/white-- understanding of racial relations, Racial Fault Lines traces the unique racial sagas of Mexicans, Chinese, and Indian peoples in their encounters with "white" Californians. Almaguer could do more to investigate interactions among such groups ACROSS the categories of "racial otherness": Mexican, Chinese, and Indian. SOme readers will also question his chronology and wonder to what extent the 'origins of white supremacy' in California might have begun much earlier than the mid-nineteenth century, where his book focuses.
Read this for a US History Class, I found the book very engaging, informative, and useful. Almaguer does a great job breaking down the complexities of the racial hierarchy in CA covering topics such as (culture, religion, language, gender, labor, law). Provides great narratives of individuals from each race during the (gold rush, post US-Mexican War, and contemporary times) and provides thorough information of the race relations during that time. He also digs into the complexities within one race for example (dark vs. light skin color). Well written, and i got a much better understanding of race, and racial issues with in present time California.
