by Royal Robbins

Royal Robbins, one of America s leading climbing figures of the Golden Age of Yosemite Climbing, continues to inspire us with his bold vision of what makes for truly great climbing and inspired living. The Golden Age is Robbins third book in his My Life autobiographical series. In book three, Royal captures his thrilling adventures during the Golden Age of Yosemite Valley: The book is about what happened to me after the first ascent of the face of Half Dome. It covers getting drafted and two years in the Army. We make the 2nd ascent of the Nose of El Capitan as well as the first ascent of the Salathe Wall on that same great rock. I meet Liz and we get married. I climb the Direct Route on Half Dome and make other Yosemite firsts. And in 1963 we make the first ascent of the Southeast Face of Mt. Proboscis in Canada. The book ends with the successful ascent of the North America Wall on El Capitan in October 1964. The Golden Age includes photos from the personal collections of Robbins and climbing colleagues that capture the majesty of the valley and the challenge and camraderie of their exploits.

Robbins first memoir in his My Life autobiographical series, To Be Brave began the tale of his adventurous life story and garnered high praise including the Special Jury Award at the prestigious Banff Mountain Festival. To Be Brave attracted positive reviews including Rock and Ice Magazine, Wall Street Journal Alpinist Review, Scouting Magazine and Mountain Gazette. Noted climber, John Long wrote, If there s a finer memoir, written by an American climber, I haven t seen it. Thrilling and adventurous, Fail Falling, the second volume of Robbins life story takes the reader on Robbins historic early first climbing ascents, including Half Dome and Sentinel Rock in Yosemite Valley, and his daring climb of the Open Book route at Tahquitz Rock. While vividly describing his famous ascents, Robbins gives us a glimpse into his adventures of the soul. As he summits daunting mountains, we learn what it means to trust ourselves and dig deeper than we thought we ever could. Fail Falling teaches us that while it may be easier to give up, there are personal rewards when we leave our doubts behind, reach within and find inner strength. The Golden Age promises to generate even more accolades, inspire more dreamers, and stir passion for living a full and beautiful life. In the 1960 s, Yosemite was the place to climb and was the perfect setting for adventure, challenge, love and life. Told through the wise eyes of the veteran climber and inspiring visionary, Royal himself, Ron Kauk writes, a kind of love story that ultimately touches my heart through his commitment to adventure, as well as his honesty...I encourage you to pause often along the way while reading this book. Imagine the unfolding of Royal s life alongside mainstream society and our climbing history to this day.

Unlike the first two books of the series which showed a lot of the humanity of Royal Robin and his climbing buddies, this volume lacks passion and insight. It's more a catalog of who climbed what line with whom during the period it covers. It feels like it was written from duty rather than desire. If you want to know all the climbing history, it's great, but it lacks the in the moment feel of the earlier volumes.
The third of a series of three books. Read them in order. I loved them all. You don't have to be a climber or outdoorsman to enjoy these books.
I enjoyed this book just as much as the other 2 volumes. It's a must read if you have read the other 2 books.
One of the truly greats. Astute observer to go with his other talents. And survived to tell all about it. THANKS!
Great read & good insights from a golden era
All of Royal Robbins books are great. Very inspirational and motivating. If you are into climbing or are at least interested in climbing I would definitly recommend reading his books...
