The description for this book, Change: Eight Lectures on the I Ching, will be forthcoming. In their midst, however, was one of the foremost non-Chinese I Ching scholars alive, Wilhelm. Hass asked him to give a few lectures to the group to help them understand the history, use and concepts behind the I Ching. As an introduction to the Book of Changes by a master these eight lectures cover an enormous amount of ground in an easy, understandable way. The translations from German to English by Cary F. Baynes are, as always, excellent.
The Description for this book, Change: Eight Lectures on the I Ching, will be forthcoming. I'd recommend this book as an accompanyment to the Baynes or Richard John Lynn translations of the Book of Changes, certainly. But for anyone using the I Ching in any translation, whatever the level of scholarship, this book will probably be a source of useful information you didn't have before. 13 people found this helpful.

The subtitle of the book, "The Wilhelm Lectures on the Book of Changes" makes it clear that it was never intended to be I Ching 101. Too difficult to understand? Given the complexity of the subject matter, it is hard to imagine a set of lectures that could be as simple and clear as these ar. Furthermore, it would help to get another I Ching just to get another interpretation and hence, another point-of-view.
The Wilhelm/Baynes I Ching is the classic go to translations for westerners. is the way Wilhelm describes the incredible scope of the book in its ability to represent wisdom through symbols and words. It has held up remarkably well for many years. Wilhelm's Eight Lectures on the I Ching is a revealing work offering deep insights into the influences that were at work in Wilhelm as a translator. Many of these show how strong his cultural and religious biases influenced the I Ching translation. In doing so they describe and provide wisdom for the entire human and natural world (so Wilhelm claims.
Mrs. Baynes is again responsible for the translation. Originally published in 1960.
One of the five classics of Confucianism, the I Ching or Book of Changes has exerted a living influence in China for three thousand years. Beginning in the dawn of history as a book of oracles, it became a book of wisdom-a common source for both Confucianist and Taoist philosophy. Mrs.
