La Rochefoucauld was the son o. Like his younger contemporary, Jean de La Bruyère, La Rochefoucauld was a man of one book. Two years after the last publication, he died in Paris. Though he did a considerable amount of writing over the years, La Rochefoucauld actually published only two works, the Mémoires and the Maximes. In addition, about 150 letters have been collected and 19 shorter pieces now known as Réflexions diverses.

It has now been proved to have been pieced together from the work of half a dozen men, with scarcely a third of it being La Rochefoucauld's. However, the pithy, elegant Maximes, (maxims) had no such fate.
