This is a very funny book. My ten-year-old grandson and I read it together. Fortunately for him, because there were words, phrases, and references he didn't understand. But that gave me the opportunity to talk about the story with him. Delightful!

This is one of the funniest middle grade novels I've read all year. 12 yr old Griff Carver is no ordinary seventh grader. He has been a member of school saftey patrol since he was six years old. Griff Carver is the first saftey patrol officer ever to be kicked out of school, while on the job.

"It wasn't ugly. At first blush, all you'd see is squeaky clean kids playing and killing time till the bell rings. Big lawn. Nice clothes. First-hand bikes. Right out of the school brochure. Maybe that's all you'd ever see. 'Cause you never wore a badge. Me? I carried that piece of tin for six years. Almost half my life. Started in first grade. Typical wet-behind-the-ears rookie. Made all the rookie mistakes. Thought I was God's gift to Safety Patrol. In retrospect, maybe I came on a little too strong. Like I was trying too hard. Like I could do it all myself. Maybe I was asking for it. Maybe not.

Griff's mother wants him to start fresh at Rampart Middle School, no safety patrol. He tries but it's in his blood. Delane, Rampart's safety patrol captain assigns the reckless Griff a partner. Thomas, the new partner is a straight by the book patrol officer. He has won a merit badge for almost everything.

Rampart's safety patrol team believe they have a tight lock on the hallways. Griff proves them wrong the first day on the job. There's something illegal going on and it leads back to Marcus, one of the most popular kid in school.

Krieg has written a great noir mystery for middle graders. There's Griff unwillingly being interviewed by his guidance counselor regrading a recent incident. It's being recorded and will be passed up the chain of command.

There's Griff the reckless, dot every i Thomas and there working relationship as partners. Can the captain be trusted?, and of course there's a girl. Verity runs the school newspapers, and is one of the few students unimpressed by Marcus.

I loved this debut and hope its the first of many. Krieg's writing and dialogue are spot on good. Griff Carver is one of my favorite male protagonist of the year.

Griff Carver, Hallway Patrol is a humorous Middle-Grade read. Krieg exaggerates a Hallway Monitor's life in a way that fans of the movie Mall Cop will enjoy. Readers of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series will be able to relate with the main character Griff or one of his classmates as they go on their crazy, school adventures. The only negative about this book is that the conclusion is very open ended, and being that there isn't yet a sequel on the way, it ruined the story a bit of me. Overall 3.5/5 stars; I would read another book by Krieg.

This review is from my 11 year old: " Very awesome book. Thrilling. Cliff Hanger. Surprising- Very surprising. The main character is a loose cannon. We listened to the audio book and the actors who read the characters were awesome! Wish the author had more books like this!"
Sadaron above the Gods
This is an excellent parody. It reminds me of every cop film I've ever seen in my life. I suppose the author must have watched scores of them as "research" for this novel. Hope his brain didn't turn to mush. And the ending leaves plenty of room for a sequel!

this book is amazing. when is the sequel. this book is about a juunior high hall monitor who was mysteriously kicked out of his old school. he stumbled on to a black market run by a devil/angel kid. tihs story is told from multiple points view and is great, the main charachter griff carver is actually mysterious even though he is one of the many narrators. as he continues to find evidence he has to make many tough descisions. this book is very much like a good eightys good cop/bad cop novel but with kids. this book is amazing could not put it down

I'd recommend this book if you enjoy reading with your children. It's smart and funny: able to please both children and adults with outright funny situations and clever dialogue.
If you have been looking for a book for your kids that they will think is really funny and that you will think is funny as well, I recommend this book. It is written in a style of a police procedural and when applied to a kid's world,is amusing from start to finish.
