by Chris Findlater

Many of Scotland's songs were collected by, and first set down by, Robert Burns. His mother used to sing songs to him as a child, and his poetry reflected this rich heritage. This book is a collection of 80 songs, and is organised alphabetically by song title, and contains a glossary to explain many of the Scots words in the songs. The book is now in its third edition and is an inexpensive and essential book for anyone interested in traditional Scottish songs arranged for voice and piano.

Very nice collection of songs, both English and Gaelic ones, which is really rather unusual. Well done! Many Scottish songbooks only include Lowland ones, or English-language ones, and ignore the existence of Gaelic altogether.

I gave it four stars instead of five because of the book's format. I was not expecting (okay, I should have looked at the size of the book, and I didn't) the book to be the standard handheld trade-paperback size and binding. This is fine if you're just reading the book, but it's really not helpful if you're trying to read the music while your hands are occupied with playing an instrument. That means that I have to take an extra step and photocopy or scan the song I want before I can practice playing it. Other than that, it's a good source and included a number of songs that I don't already have.
No dimensions of this book were given when I ordered it. I was hoping for the best---but it turned out to be very small. The notes and words are hard to read, and the binding is tight. That said, the songs are lovely and easy to play.
I expected background with the songs and a pronunciation guide to the celtic words. Perhaps I ordered the wrong book. Also difficult to handle because it is pocket book size.
