I enjoyed this legal suspense novel. It’s the first book I’ve read featuring Defense Attorney Paul Madriani, but I think it stood fine on its own, without having read the first two books in the series.

There were plenty of twists and turns as Madriani attempts to prove that his former sister-in-law did not murder the new wife of her ex-husband. When Madriani’s wife was dying, she made him promise that he would look out for Laurel, but Laurel’s making it difficult for him because she refuses to tell him the whole story. (A plot device for the reader’s benefit.)

As he and his partner chase down witnesses who can exonerate his client, its evident that his life may be at risk as well. A couple things I guessed and a couple things seemed a little convenient, but mostly I thought the plot twists were fun. That feeling of: Uh-oh, how’s he going to recover from that blistering attack from the prosecution?

There were some odd storytelling choices and I hate when an author switches from sometimes calling a person by his/her first name and other times refers to the person by his/her last name, but mostly, the writing was entertaining and well done.
Compelling. Stand-alone that is both easy to follow and difficult to put down.

No graphic violence or drag-you-down drama. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions.

The storyline revolves around Paul Madriani, his ex sister-in-law Laurel Vega, and the people that despise them.

The characters are believable with distinct personalities and emotions. Thought-provoking, informative and humorous dialogue.

He is what I would call a ‘social contrarian.’ Harry is largely against everything.

Never let it be said that Harry is bewitched by the forces of consistency.

‘If necessity is the mother of invention, government is the father of [email protected]@ups.’

I will re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
Lonesome Orange Kid
I figured it out easily and early. I changed my mind on whodunnit mid way. Changed again and finally it was over. This is a terrific read which won't disappoint.
Excellent pleasure reading. Well written, suspenseful, interesting and fun. There are twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes which, when revealed, are consistent with previous events and characters' behavior. Mr. Martini provides enough information about investigation, evidence, and criminal court procedure to orient and educate. He does this easily and smoothly. He also includes some methods (including dirty tricks) used by the defense and/or prosecution. The author clearly knows this territory well.

Good descriptions, action, characterization, and plot.

It is one of those engaging novels that are hard to put down. After the dramatic and surprising ending, I wanted more; so, I read it again a few weeks later. That's about the best recommendation I can give.
'Recently I read one of Steve Martini's books and liked it so so well that I went back and started reading from book 1. I'm up to book 5 in the Paul Madriani series and I can't get enough of it. I particularly like the courtroom scenes, and his reasons for what he does. He writes in the 1st person so you hear his thoughts as well. The author is an attorney and he gives very well constructed plots, characters, and exciting courtroom drama. He often explains the workings of the judicial system which could make one cynical of the word "justice". I'm looking forward to a few more weeks of courtroom drama. I think you would like it.
A typical Paul Madriani legal novel! Numerous surprises including the ending. Difficult story to put down!
Wow. This is the best book so far in this series. The characters are well written with great interplay. It was intricate, suspenseful, and masterfully played out. Just beware you will get to a certain point of the book and will not be able to stop reading it. Can't wait to read the next one.
This is the second Steve Martini book I have read and both of them have been exceptionally well written. The twists and deception of people kept me guessing on the final outcome.
