Hallolan
PLAY MELANCHOLY BABY gets going pretty much right out of the gate with believable characters that are rich with a certain degree of seediness needed for a tale of this type. Set in the late 1970s, the story meanders along the coast of California, around the south side of San Francisco with a spattering of storytelling in Amsterdam, Rome, and the coast of Greece, as well. Casey, our hero, needs Europe in his story so that we get a complete background on some of the main characters, as they reappear to haunt him. His job as a piano player at Gershwin's Bar, in fictional Morro Bay, lends to his vast knowledge of name-dropping songs throughout the story, some of which add to the smoke-filled air in the rooms he plays in. Never do you think that he is the resident "lounge lizard" because he has an air about him that is classy....unlike the actual lounge lizard that we see in Harv, who is as slimy as a guy can get. In fact, the number of slimy characters in this tale of loves lost and found and lost again are enough to catch and hold your interest quite easily. Casey juggles the songs just as he juggles the characters in his story, who keep you scratching your head as to who the perpetrator of the crime is....right up to the end.
PLAY MELANCHOLY BABY reminded me of the murder mysteries of the 20s and 30s but with a flair for the funky beats of the mid-70s, along with a roaming plot that doesn't let you down with each corner it makes for classic entertainment, suspense, and an intricate plot. I definitely recommend it.
Tori Texer
Of all the piano bars on the California coast, she had
to walk into his ... and wouldn't you know, her
favorite song is "As Time Goes By."

It's 1977. Casey Jones hides from his past, tickling
the ivories for customers who love the songs of The
Great Depression and World War II. The mystery woman
who walks in one night is an eyeful and it turns out
she can sing, too. Once upon a time she was Dixie
Bowen, and her face was on the cover of magazines.

She doesn't wander in by accident. She wants to hire
Casey to find her missing daughter. A reluctant Casey
is yanked back into a past he wanted to forget and a
present that could be much too brief if an old enemy
catches up with him.

Lots of twists and turns in this little jewel, with
some steamy scenes in flashback.
PLAY MELANCHOLY BABY is a mystery in a time capsule,
a colorful evocation of time and place, beautifully written.
