It is not uncommon for new editions of texts to be similar to the previous version with a few added chapters, but this is absolutely NOT the case with Mr. Malekoff's third edition. Group Work with Adolescents, is in my opinion, not only one of the most important texts in our profession, but it is one of the most relevant and current. It is the seminal work on Social Group Work with Adolescents. The author has spent his entire career dedicated to working with adolescents and does so with tremendous care and respect, and this translates into is writing. As a social work educator for almost 20 years, I have never taught a group work course without one of the editions being a required text. Mr. Malekoff models good group work skills, a way of approaching working with adolescents that is respectful, relaxed, but with a disciplined thought system. This is excellent modeling for any clinician. In the newest edition, he added chapters that reflect the pulse he has on what is current in both the academy and in the agency context. This book is written for us - teachers, students, practitioners- and the chapters, like Evidence-Based group work, for example, are meant to give us ideas about how to use curricula in practice and hold onto the principles of mutual aid that create supportive and safe connections between clients. In essence, he shows us how to marry both approaches. Mr. Malekoff is not just a skilled clinician, but a an activist practitioner, which is a part of social group work's history. He lives this in his work, and this is evident in the text as well. Group Work with Adolescents, Third Edition will be the kind of text that students will cite most in their written assignments in social work school because it is accessible, beautifully written, thoughtful, and one of the finest resources for social work practice with one of the most challenging client populations. Adolescents intimidate and scare many practitioners. Mr. Malekoff shows us how to make meaning of their behavior, be respectful of it, try not to control the process, and to appreciate their humanity. This is a beautifully organized and executed text. It is written with authority and tremendous humility and care. It is one of my favorite resources in the field. I ordered it for my group work classes the minute it was available. By the end of this academic year (2014-2015), close to 700 students at my institution will have read it. Whether you are an academic, field supervisor, or student, this is one to add to your personal library. You will return to it again and again.
Simple fellow
This book is invaluable as a "text" on the subject. It can be used as a reference, but also makes easy and enjoyable reading. I am using it as a "refresher" as I ran adolescent groups years ago and now again, am being asked to provide. I am particularly
impressed with the mixture of Mr. Malekoff's respect for and seriousness about the children he works with, his highest recommendation of groups, as an excellent modality for this age, and his lovely sense of humor, which i believe is lacking in many treatments, for young and older, and which I always try to use or introduce to people in my care! Thanks for the helpful source!
Andrew Malekoff does a wonderful job of sharing what real group work is all about. He is humble, has a sense of humor and true appreciation for adolescents. He shares his years of experience and the wisdom he has gained in a generous and very understandable way.
Excellent copy
Great Book!
This is one of the few books I've held on to from my graduate coursework. It's very informative and still manages to be an enjoyable, engaging read. I especially enjoyed reading examples from Malekoff's work with adolescents. It's obvious that Malekoff has a true sense of compassion and respect for the adolescents he works with.
This book came in excellent condition and also came very quickly. I am completely satisfied with the service I received.
I wish I had it.
