Wonderful read! Albeit the quality of the book is hardly the work of this online shopping website, but they delivered the novel as promised and in great condition. No problems.

The fifth floor corridor of the Kaiser Wilhem Institute in Berlin, where Josef Bernhardt spent the war years, was lined with jars containing brains of fallen Nazi aviators preserved in formaldehyde

A German-Jewish émigré, now in Iowa City, collapses after memories of his childhood in Berlin and of his vanished relatives resurface. Most of the novel is set in the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute in Berlin during WWII, where the 16 year old boy hides out as a Drosophila technician/researcher to avoid possible deportation and death. The Russian chief of the institute is modeled after the geneticist N.V.Timofeeff-Ressovsky, who in real life had an equally interesting and tragic life in prewar and war-Berlin and later in the Soviet Union. The novel is entertaining and sometimes captivating, although the fixation on sex and the emotional detachment of the boy from his close relatives don't ring quite true given the circumstances. The love affair at the end is equally incongruent. As a scientist, I wished the author had told us more (or anything, for that matter) about the aims and results of the genetic research that was performed, which was in fact quite cutting-edge. Overall worth reading even though it has its flaws.

Berlin Wild is an unforgettable book and Elly Welt a consummate writer. If you feel overstuffed with stories from the holocaust, read Berlin Wild. This is a powerful and moving novel about a half Jewish boy who brings us into the Kaiser Wilhem Institute where early experiments with uranium were made. An important book in the story of my own life and perhaps yours too, or someone you know.I want to read everything she's written. She wins my highest praise for prose that evokes more than it narrates.

I loved this book. It captures you quickly and pulls you through the tragic and comic life of Joseph, a brilliant, half-Jewish boy who survives WWII in a scientific institute to finally deal with his survivor's guilt thirty years later. This book won awards and rave reviews when it was published. It is totally worth it. The writing is great. Thread after thread interweaves from the beginning to the end. Joseph is an eccentric and real character. Read it!
