What a pleasure it was to read a novel by one of the Science Fiction grandmasters! An intelligent, insightful reflection on the age-old struggle between less advanced indigenous peoples and more technologically advanced civilizations that would usurp their lands and their ways. This novel offers an entertaining, epic story line filled with strong characters. The style is crisp and engaging. I was reminded more than once of Ruth Beebe Hill's Native American saga HANTA YO, one of my favorite novels. This struck me as Hanta Yo transported into a science fiction setting.

It also strikes me as ironic, if not rather disturbing, to see such an accomplished author writing at the top of her game receiving so little attention here when mediocre, amateurish, dime-a-dozen-novels are awash in (largely faux) five-star ratings.

Thank you for many hours of reading pleasure, Catherine. :)
Very competent writing, good plot. Managed to hint at "Mother Earth" spirit without turning it into Freda. [Freida?] Nice turn at the end. Happy ending, but unusual, unique. I'd buy the next one this author writes.

WOW, this is a great book. I really enjoy epic sci-fi and fantasy but do get a little bored or find they have too much description, but not this one. I couldn't put it down and was so engrossed in it! So well written and such a great story. So much depth to the characters and depth to emotions and humanity. This is a very thought-provoking story and is now one of my favorite ever books. This book is about Earth after it is devastated due to pollution. Some people take to other planets, some prepare and stay, and some just stay. Now it is hundreds of years later and there are 2 groups of people on Earth, the learned 'men-of-the-mountain' who retain knowledge and technology and 'the people' who are similar to Native Americans and these two groups get along in peace. The book is about this story, but then it adds another element - the return of people who left to other planets and they have been continuing to learn and develop like civilization would have done on Earth.
Unforgettable story and characters.
The book is the best - and most realistic - view of what is supposed to become of Mother Earth, if we follow the same line in the way of living. The story is about survivers of Mother's anger... Can WE survive it? Not likely...
