by Alan Jacobs

Spanning 4,000 years of world literature, this expansive anthology gathers 600 poems by more than 250 poets. In addition to hundreds of masterworks in English, there are verses translated from Sanskrit, Egyptian, Hindi, Persian, Hebrew, Chinese, and Homeric Greek, including selections from the great epics and meditations, such as the Rig Veda, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and Tao Te Ching. The writers represented here range from ancient and medieval greats (Homer, Lu Yun, Dante, Rumi, Judah Halevi) to the metaphysical poets, including Donne; from the mystics and religious poets (Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, Hopkins) to more secular visionaries (Blake, Shelley, Whitman, Dickinson, Yeats, Rilke, Stevens, and Ginsberg). The range of themes is equally wide, so whatever path your journey may take, Poetry for the Spirit will open your mind and touch your heart.

This is among the best purchases I have ever made. It is in the basket next to my "prayer chair" and hardly a day goes by without my opening it. I look forward to years of enrichment from this treasure trove.

Poets throughout the ages, and across cultures, have attempted through words to express the Ineffable. While all words fall short of describing transcendental experience and states of consciousness, such poetry as this help to train the mind of reader or the listener to look away from the rantings of the world and come to that silent place of the Beloved. Such poetry that can be found in this book has been wings for me at times when my mind was dragging itself through the mud of petty pursuits. Poetry for the Spirit is an incredible comprehensive collection of such spiritual poetry compiled by Alan Jacobs, a spiritual poet of his own right. You will find poetry from East and West and spanning over a thousand years. Read this book from beginning to end and you will indeed be changed, you will find wings to lift your mind back to its Source.

This book is arranged beautifully. The poems are the type that you would love to share with family on holidays and throughout the rest of the year. I loved that the author included a variation of length in the provided poems and ther eis something in the book for every occasion. This would make a perfect gift for a wedding or birth. Love it.

This collection lives up to the title, providing a rich and expansive corpus of poems that leads one on a journey of discovery -- through the eyes of poets across the ages and continents -- of that which resonates across time and space at the core of all human spirits. A joy to give away as well as to keep. The organization according to time eras juxtaposes that which is culturally familiar side by side with the unfamiliar to startle one into the realization of the commonality and continuity of the voice of wisdom, beauty, and spiritual transcendence.

I love the title as well as the content. This book causes one to think deeply and understand that we are all connected. I hope that my book of poetry will do as well. Thank you, Alan for sharing.
